Official Review

The R4iGold in general

The R4iGold is a slot-1 flashcard which is compatible with the Nintendo DS/DSlite/DSi/DSiXL. There is a version which is compatible with the 3DS, which is called R4iGold 3DS. The card has official Wood Support, which means it runs on the popular Wood R4 firmware made by YellowWoodGoblin.

Features of the R4iGold

Features that are listed on the back of the box:

• Compatible with all DS editions of different kind of language.
• Support SDHC.
• Second generation storage device. (No booting tool required)
• Flush fitting slot 1 card.
• Uses MicroSD car, FAT 16 or 32.
• Supports any MicroSD card speed with no lag in game.
• Supports clean ROM, drag and drop. Works on any OS.
• Built in NoPass
• Automatically detect save type.
• Save directly to MicroSD card, not to onboard chip.
• Supports Moonshell and other homebrew.
• User-friendly skinnable interface. Touchscreen or button operation.
• Supports Wi-Fi game, DS Rumble pak, DS Browser.
• Supports changes of the background of Operation Interface.
• Supports Skin DIY by setting background and font colors on Main Menu and Game Menu manually and automatically.
• Supports 4-scale-lightness adjust ment (DS Lite Only)
• Supports the Soft Reset.
• Supports Action Replay cheat
• Moonshell 2.02 supports Software Reset Function
• DLDI auto-patching

Looks familiar to the original R4 features.

Software

The R4iGold doesn't require any flashing/patching before you can use it on the DSi firmware v1.4.1 and it shows up as 'Alex Rider: Storm Breaker'. The menu itself looks like the DSi menu:

After you choose the option game: Wood firmware will be launched which consists of a Acekard/AKAIO like menu.

When pressing start while standing on a ROM, you'll see these options:

• Copy/Cut/Delete/Paste
• Settings
• File Info
• Help
• Tools
• Return.

When pressing the Y button while standing on a ROM, you'll see these options:

• Press the X button for Cheats.
• Press the Y button for Settings.
• Press the A button to save settings.

NDS Game Back Up Compatibility

These games are tested on Wood R4iGold v1.28.

Plants vs. Zombier (U): Worked perfectly
Kaiju Busters Powered (J): Worked perfectly
Zombie Daisuki (J): Worked perfectly
Cabelas Dangerous Hunts 2011 (U): Worked perfectly
Eigo de Tabisuru Little Charo (J): Worked perfectly.
Pokémon Black Version (E): Worked perfectly
Pokémon White Version (E): Worked perfectly
Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars - Red (J): Worked perfectly
LEGO Star Wars III:  The Clone Wars (E): Worked perfectly
Tron: Evolution (E):Worked perfectly
Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded (U): Worked perfectly.
Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded (E)(CRACKED): Worked perfectly.

All the games I tried worked perfectly on Wood R4iGold v1.28.

Conclusion

The R4iGold is a great card, and when using the Wood R4iGold firmware it has almost a perfect compatibility. The R4iGold might be an Acekard/R4 clone, but in my opinion, it is one of the best R4 cards.

Pro's:
• Almost perfect NDS compatibility when using the Wood R4iGold firmware.
• Simple DSi like menu.
• The R4iGold will run on DSi 1.4.1 without needing to flash or patch the card.

Cons:
• Non-spring-loaded MicroSD slot.

Final Score: 95%

DS-Scene would like to thank RealHotStuff for sending us the review sample.

Great review, this seems to be one of the best clones out there.

To be honest, I prefer non-spring loaded card slots so that would be a plus for me :D .

Thank you! But I prefer spring loaded cards because you can take the MicroSD out, while the flashcard is still in your DS.

Yes, I can see how it would be very helpful in a situation like that.

How is the build quality of this card compared to the other ones?

The built quality of this card is really good, it feels real secure. It's better then the SuperCard DSTWO, which almost broke when I pulled it out of the package.

Nice review :)
If I hadn't played all the good games on DS yet and didn't have an Acekard this would sure be a good choice :)

I love you for this sentence:  It's better then the SuperCard DSTWO, which almost broke when I pulled it out of the package..

Yes. Indeed. Build quality is OK. Wood is OK. Card is cheap. Card saves hours of power compared to crappy DS2.

What's not OK: No 3DS update files available, but a new card. Assholes.
