Not only was the VENOM release trimmed but some of the content of the rom was different. Some Header bits and other bytes were missing or changed. (I compared the two with HexCmp)

Would that have any affect on the actual game?

Venom may of cracked the rom for all flashcarts and avoided telling everyone in an .nfo.. OR the source of the rom is from somewhere it shouldn't be.

Seems Venom indeed cracked the ROM - with the NukeThis the game crashes constantly with a black screen on my Edge 1.11, and I can't save. Going back to the Venom ROM (using the same .sav) the game works without problems.

I hate these 'rules' of the DS scene (not this site), why do ROMs always need to be proper, in archives of a couple of MB, named correctly, and so forth? As long as the game works, people will like it. There's no point in nuking a perfectly working copy of the game and putting a non-working version instead.

Well, a cracked ROM should work on current cart firmwares, but a clean ROM should/might work on future firmwares, depending on the people responsible for cart firmwares.
You could always apply an IPS or Xdelta patch to a clean or cracked ROM, to convert them to the one or other version. Me, I would prefer if groups released clean ROMs, and a separate patch to go with it, if necessary for the time being.
