When I apply the patch, it generates an archive .bak and I still have the .nds. That means that the .bak is the old (unpatched) and the .nds is the patched now?

I'm playing this game, it's really cool. I haven't had any trouble not being able to read Japanese, it's pretty much a dungeon crawl monster mash, which is great. I've figured out how to blacksmith my own weapons, and I think I've managed to find something that randomizes all the levels of the dungeon so I can do them again...
I did notice that there are a lot of little things that if I did read Japanese would really improve what I'm doing.
I was wondering if anyone could give me a quick run down of some of the important stuff I might be missing, or if anyone has a link to a walkthrough that I can just throw into a simple translator and figure out for myself, that would be awesome!
If not, cheers anyway, I'll keep mashing away.

If I get around to playing the game I can tell you what you're missing. Here is a guide, though I don't know if it's any good since I haven't played it yet: http://games.gaym.jp/DS/crotre/
edit: Curses! It requires the universal child's play patch. Can't use it on linux sooo..

Yeah, if I can get it pre-patched that would work, but I don't think it's popular enough for that. Everywhere I've seen they just include a link to the patch.
edit: nevermind I found it

Ok, I read through the guide. I'm not missing anything much in not being able to read the game.
Basically you start at the top of an undergound maze, you have to climb down over 50 floors of dungeon, and save a princess from the devil. It's a very simple dungeon crawl, navigate maze, unlock door, get to every 5th floor and fight a boss. Return to your house and jump in bed to save the game, and go downstairs in your house to upgrade your weapons.
I think the main part of the game that I will probably miss out on is how customizable my character is, but it seems like I could just save the game and experiment and not worry too much about the results.
It's great simplistic monster fighting fun.

Yeah it's pretty fun, I just played for like an hour hahah. SynSophia is quickly becoming some of my favorite developers.
Anyway, yeah for the most part the big thing you're missing by not knowing Japanese is the special abilities of all your equipment (and the effects of the skills you get).
Some of the stuff you might not care about are the 'achievements', which are medals you get for completing certain tasks (like get four character classes to level 20). When you get a certain number of medals in a row (it's lower lefthand option in the menu screen) you'll get a special bonus.
You probably figured out that there are actually multiple dungeons for each 5 floors, you talk to that thing at the top of the dungeon to change them. Accessing the other dungeons is sort of important because it changes the enemies (including bosses) and NPCs that you meet. Different enemies drop different materials, which are important for NPC fetch-quests and forging equipment.
A lot of NPCs will also teach you new skills. Different NPCs teach different classes (thief, fighter, mage, priest), and it should be obvious which one is which. Too bad I'm not a little kid in Japan with friends to play this with, I don't think I'd be using priest class solo much...
At any other time I would be writing a translation guide for it, but I'm kind of busy now. Neat game though.
