So apparently all DSi software will be region locked. This was kind of a no brainer imo but i guess some people may have been waiting on this news to decide whether or not to import one. Heres what CVG had to say.

Quote: CVG
Nintendo has issued a statement to CVG to clarify the confusion over the region-based restrictions on the new DSi.

"DSi software (software that is only compatible with DSi) is region locked, eg: European DSi software can only be played on European DSi consoles," a Nintendo spokesperson has told CVG.

They confirmed that this means BOTH download-able games and future DSi-only cartridge-based games would be region locked.

"Nintendo DS software however is region free so you can play any DS software on DSi from any region. You can also browse the Internet on your DSi wherever you are in the world and exchange your photos with friends from around the world."

This follows a statement from NOA exec VP Cammie Dunanway saying: "I believe that just as you can currently buy a DS in Japan and use it here in the U.S., that you should be able to do that with DSi," as we reported this morning.

Nintendo went on to explain to CVG: "DSi is region locked because DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region. Also because we are including parental control functionality for Nintendo DSi and each region has its unique age limit made by different independent."

So there you go - DSi-only titles will be locked. Standard DS software won't be. But how many of the DS' future games will be DSi-only? That's the next question..

Thanks to dnm1983 for the heads up.

I'm honestly quite disappointed and disgusted with this move by Nintendo. One of the great things about the handheld generation (at least in regards to Nintendo) was that the lack of region locking actually encouraged more sales of the handheld. People were apt to pay silly amounts to import the games that didn't come over instead of merely downloading the rom and playing it on their computer. Despite the prevailing elements of flash cards everywhere, the DS has continued to do fantastic, and this locking with the DSi is a screaming, flailing step in the opposite direction. If anything, I feel like Nintendo is now openly coaxing people to try and find an exploit within the new built-in SD card in order to experience games that are not legally released in their area. Hell, I *bought* copies of Ouendan and Mother 3 because I have the option to play them on my system. Now it feels like the only thing I can do is either a.) buy two systems or b.) pray for more games to be released in the US.
Shame, Nintendo. For shame.

Does this mean that if flashcard would work on the dsi you could only run roms from that region ie (U) rom on us dsi?

The only way to know is for the DSI to be released.
It is possible that DSI flashcards could be region free patched, or re-patched to the region of your DSI.
And it is currently impossible to know if current Slot1 cards will support DSI titles, or if you will need a whole different Slot1 device.
And there is no way to know if a new DSI Slot1 cart would support DS games.

All FlashCard questions can not be answered till the blasted thing comes out.

I friggin' knew it.  Perrin Kaplan got our hopes up with the Wii, too.

Well, we'll see if the homebrew community/pirates'll take this sitting down.

This is a fairly stupid question. How would anyone know if you can make flashcards work on a system that's not out?

From what I could make out of the Japanese technical specs (which isn't much considering I don't know a lick of Japanese), we're still working with an Arm7.  That still means, in the event that we're able to even use a flash card, that we can still program homebrew via C/C++.

Personally, people (especially you noobs), I would wait until the Japan release and see if any of those DSi's will run our current flash cards.  It's quite possible that we might be looking at getting brand new flash cards in order to bypass the region locking and to handle the newer roms.  Speaking of the DSi roms, I'm thinking they might become easier to dump, what with the SD slot, but that's just theory.

i heard they are trying to put on security on there because they know that people would try to use roms that way
