Sander Stolk (or Dark Knight Ez as some of our visitors may know him) has been talking recently with the DS-Scene staff about his new project which was originally discussed way back last year during our exlusive interview with him. Now you have to bear in mind that all the graphics featured in the current build of RTS4DS will not be included in the final release but what you can see in this video is pretty darn impressive I am sure you will all agree.
RTS4DS is not just an RTS game remember, it is an engine which will allow you to create your own RTS game.
Here is what Sander had to say about this video
Sander Stolk on RTS4DS preview
I've been anxious to show off my latest project for the Nintendo DS handheld, RTS4DS. After having been working on it for so long, I feel the time has finally come to show its current status to the public with a short video.
Enjoy the preview movie! Hosted at Veoh as a Flash movie. Preferably use this link as it saves this site a lot of bandwidth. If it doesn't load properly for you, try clicking the link on that site to the RTS4DS movie shown in the right bar in the box mentioning the Publisher. That worked a treat for me. Hosted on this site in .wmv format, as alternative.
RTS4DS is an RTS engine. What does this mean? The RTS you just saw on the video is just a folder on your media card which contains all the graphics, sounds and information about structures, units and levels. The actual rts4ds.nds file reads this all out and turns it into something playable on your DS. Quite nice.
This particular RTS you've seen in the video running in RTS4DS, has the graphics and sounds ripped (and adjusted) from the old DOS game Dune 2. This particular RTS will never be released to the public and is only used for testing my RTS engine. That is, unless Westwood contacts me about it and wants to release Dune 2 on the Nintendo DS using my RTS engine.
It will be relatively easy for people to create their own RTS for my engine. Graphics artists, sound effects creators, stop by at the forums here if you can and want to help out with creating an RTS for RTS4DS.
The quality of the homebrew being released by Sander is awesome. We look forward to this release with great anticipation and I am sure you will all join us.
Thanks for letting us know this was ready Sander, you've got us drooling over this one!
I'm really excited to work with Sander again and be a part of this project. I've never been into Dune 2, but I'm a big StarCraft addict as far as RTS games go, so in redoing all the graphics I'll be using prerendered 3D and following more a StarCraft design, but all original of course, rather than trying to redo Dune 2. I hope you'll all like that decision and my style of graphics.
Hey guys I just hasd a question and you'r opinion on a game that I would like to possible made on ds if I get into DS heavily, I really want to see a game like Fallout on NDSL, I have been dreaming to have it on a PSone but no luck but I think that it would be a great idea and comback classic. I know atm someone is making Fallout: Europe but I want to go beyond that with grapics you guys think it is possible to make the First Fallout 1(pc verion) into a NDSL game????
Making a pixel-perfect port seems pretty daunting since there's a whole lot of content there, but with a corner cut here and there I can say with absolute certainty that Fallout 1 would work on the DS. That's not a project for one person though, or even for a small team. It kills me to say it, but I don't think the homebrew scene has the resources to put a project like that together. Still, it would be basically one of the greatest things ever if it happened. Especially if it were open-source with a scenario editor. Oh man, just imagine it... okay, I'll stop myself before I get too carried away.
Very impressive. I hope the frame rate is going to be smooth though because Settler didn't do to well with many objects on screen. I wanted Warfare Incorporated to be ported to the DS badly, it was the best Palm/PPC RTS game. Maybe someone can recreated it with this.
