With this tool, you can backup/restore any save from an original nds game card but also you can backup the game too. All the process are done via FTP protocol and wifi of course.

You can also restore a save to the card. So, for example, you might be able to download somebody elses save and upload that to your card. I don't know if there are any game save repositories out there, but there might be. There ought to be now that we have this tool (speaking theoretically as I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Don't know if it works.)
are there any guides out there for what FTP programs to use and how to set them up for this? The poorly translated japanese (thanks google) from the home page doesn't offer any clues.
You need a server ftp program on your PC. I use this freeware (only for home users) ALFTP. Run ALFTP and activate server mode by pressing the icon server (run server). In Server setup window, create a user ID account (logon) with password, a root directory assigned to your hard drive where data will be saved from NDS (Directory settings > Home directory) and click OK. DLDI patch NDS Backup Tool for your linker and modify NDS_Backup_Tool_Wifi.ini with your notepad like that.
