1. You either solder a Mod Chip into the unit OR you could choose the software alternative and softmod your PS2 with a modified Memory Card OR acquire a MagicSwap disc.
2. There's no point in dumping your PS2 BIOS - all BIOS'es are already available online, and provided you have a PS2, you're perfectly entitled to "acquire" one. As far as I know, dumping one requires J-Tagging the unit if it was not modded or dump via USB if you have a method of booting homebrew already.
3. It will remain perfectly functional.

MagicSwap (HDadvance), a fliptop case replacement, network adapter, and a hard drive will give you everything you could need.

Sadly you guys talking to Indonesian here that all he knows is go to the shop, get a modded ps2, then go and play it.
Foxi4 explain everything you need to know about PS2 Modding, I prefer using Modified memory card, since you don't have to go breaking your ps2 and soldering stuff... And I don't think MagicSwap is a good solution here... Well I'm talking about Slim of course.

Plus mod chip breaks your ps2 easily, your optic read more harder than usual, and it probably affect your power supply too (just like what happen to my ps2)

HDD is a good solution, ext HDD is a bad solution.

Modchips do not affect the tear and wear of the optical drive in the slightest and use barely any power Kes. If your optical drive was damaged because of a modchip, it was more than likely badly soldered or it was factory damadged and the problem surfaced after prolonged use. ;)

or my ps2 modder took opportunity in modifying my optic lenses:/
like leveling the voltage in the optic

but I don't know... I heard the old cases about PS2 Slim with matrix = burning mobo, probably just a joke.

Well - every modchip is a toll for the original design and no mod is perfect. If the modchip designers did something *wrong* then mobos were exposed to excess electricity and went poof in some cases. I don't see why an optic lens would die though... Not that it matters - HDD's are the "future".

you won't easily found modchip in retail stores
place like http://www.mod-chip.com/ps2-c-22.html or other place just google it, can deliver you some good quality modchip.

if you talking about HDD, you either use NA Board on PS2 Fat, or External HDD on PS2 Fat/Slim
either way, you need Hacked MMC with a loader to launch the ISO browser for your HDD.
