A social stigma of handhelds would be more appropriate.

Frankly I'd just use my camera to take pictures to avoid any imagined threats to my delicate sensitivities.

okay, yeah, that i get. a grown-up on the bus or train playing with a ds, i can imagine the deriding looks, but the good thing is, you're looking at your ds anyways, so you won't even notice them. also, with a bit of luck, it makes for some great stories. that one time for example, i was reading the "100 classic book collection" on the subway and after watching me for a couple of minutes an old lady asked me if the ds is mind-controlled - i used the shoulder buttons to flip the pages and she didn't see my fingers move cuz the ds blocked the view, so she really assumed that i turned the pages with my brainpowers, that was awesome. after i explained it to her, i had to get off the train immediately so my held-back laughter wouldn't tear me apart.
and then there was this one time i had to explain to a young turk how to get a 3 star savegame on NSMB. he was absolutley convinced that no one in their right mind would ever put that much work in a videogame and totally freaked out when i showed him my savegame....good times!

Using rationale on a paranoid person. tsk tsk.

Seriously, it doesn't trouble me too much. I just make sure to avoid the games that have you blowing into the mic, or using the stylus like a spaz (sorry spazzy people). The only times I've felt truly uncomfortable was when some woman kept staring at me. She was reading a newspaper and kept looking up towards me smirking, another time when I was younger I gave some pokeman thing to some kid after going in length about pokemans. The latter wasn't so bad, didn't care much for it and his mother seemed pretty grateful.

If cellphones can have 5 megapixel ones, sometimes with optical zoom, while remaining slim... I can't see why the 3DS wasn't equipped with a GOOD lens and a GOOD matrix that'll make GOOD pictures.

Not "like a weeal camewa!" ones, but at least "normal" ones.

Don't justify Nintendo here. They're making the 3DS as cheapo as they can, just like they did with ALL THEIR OTHER CONSOLES before (except of the Gamecube. It was awesome for its time).

Well, cameras with a higher resolution come at an exponentially higher price, too. I know a camera of 3MP won't cost that much more than a .3MP one, but the device already costs €/$250, and Nintendo wants to keep their products family friendly (i.e. they want to sell more of 'em), so if they put in a camera that's about $20 more expensive (I'm pulling these numbers out of my ass, btw, as I don't know exactly, I'm just trying to bring my point across), less people will want to buy the device, or they will at least wait until an eventual price drop, or a '3DS Lite' (or something like that, anyway).

Damn, I should stop using so many parentheses.

Anyway, I agree the cameras look terrible, though. For some reason, pics taken on my DSi look better than those taken on my 3DS, even though the camera resolutions are the same (.3MP). Weird.

Where's my 3D porn, god damn it?
That's exactly what the 3DS was made for.

I have no idea, but I'm pissed that it's taking so long. Best we've got is some model whom I've never heard of posted some classy/semi-risque pics that she shot on the 3DS. Decent, but not really fappage.

Edit: Unless you were joking. At which point, I, too, was joking and totally not really looking for porn. Either. At all. *cough*

The camera was always a gimmick. It's a gaming device first and foremost.

EDIT: Oh come on, Athmel! In the age of toasters and fridges having cameras, you tell me that putting a low-quality one in a top-shelf product is justified? Don't make me laugh, please.

5 Megapixel? What is this? 2010? Phones are 8 MP now. -Talk2Hand-

When manufacturing anything on a mass scale, hardware is crazy cheap. The difference in price between a .3 MP camera and a 3 MP camera is like... $1, give or take.

In terms of hardware, the 3DS is only worth $100 in parts, the extra $150 goes in the pockets of marketers, affiliates, and of course Nintendo's own pockets. $100 out of $250 parts for the hardware, and the rest of the $150 is for profit, and paying the rest of the expenses.

I can guess that 3DS has a .3 MP camera for one of two reasons. It's either better equipped for recognition/gaming, or that they have a deal with their camera supplier. Its most likely the same supplier for the DSi as well.

But $1 is alot when its on this scale. If 3DS sells 1,000,000 units, thats an extra $1,000,000 in profit because they made the choice to skimp on materials. And come on... Its Nintendo, theres an almost garunteed 75 million units in its lifetime, meaning an extra $75 mill. Nintendo is being daring/arrogant with the $250 price tag. It could have been $200 and still make a decent profit.

You're almost exactly right. At breakdown, the system costs approx. $101. As much as I hate to admit it, Nintendo could have seriously made a minor improvement in the camera and still had a fantastic profit. The fact that Reggie was just on Jimmy Fallon the other night to pimp the system proves that Nintendo is playing hardball to win with this one, and it was a given since the word came that this wasn't a hoax. I still like the way it looks on the 3DS, but I would feel much better with even a mildly better camera. I don't need 5 megapixels. Two or three would be plenty and look so much better.

pfsh, going on fallon can hardly be considered "playing hardball", now can it?

show me the oprah episode where the audience reaches under their seats and oprah screams "AAAAA FREEEEEEEE NINTENDOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 3DS FOR EEEVEERYBOOOOOODYYYYYYYYYYYY!", then we're talking. seriously, nothing provides the industry with better means to whore themselves out than US tv,
and fallon just has to be the least classy brothel one could choose for that - apart from george lopez maybe.
