So I recently got a DSi to replace my DS Lite. Because I previously used a DSTT flash cart, I had to get a new one that worked on the DSi. I settled on an R4i-SDHC 3DS RTS (i.e. the latest one here). I've tested it out a bit and it's running my games fine. However, I do have one or two questions...
First of all, I can't seem to connect to anything other than WEP or unsecured within games. I would like to connect to WPA/WPA2 but I've looked around and it appears to not be possible, even with an actual game cart. Is this correct, or am I doing something wrong?
I'm also wondering about DSi-enhanced features. For example things like more battery bars and voice chat in Pokemon Black. I've heard that only CycloDS iEvolution cards can do it, is that right?
I've looked around online but most information about this seems like it could be outdated. If anybody would be able to tell me how or if these things are possible with my R4i it'd be greatly appreciated.
Connecting to WPA networks with a DSi is only possible when using DSi games or DSi Enhanced games (and DSiWare, the DSi browser and the DSi shop, of course). There is no way to connect to WPA networks with DS games on a DSi, and DSi flashcards are still essentially DS games, so they can't use WPA connections. DS games have to use WEP or unsecured connections, sadly. Although now that I'm typing this, weren't online features (aka Nintendo WFC) for all DS/DSi/Wii games shut down a couple of months ago? Are you using any games or homebrew that didn't make use of Nintendo WFC for their online features?
From what I recall, DSi enhanced features and DSi games only ever worked on the CycloDSi, as you mentioned, but I also recall that it never really worked well.
Ah OK, that makes sense about the WPA. I forgot about Nintendo WFC being shut down for certain things though. Most games I play don't really require it, but I would like to download weekly puzzles for the Professor Layton games and play Mario Kart DS online.
My mistake, I meant video chat in Black/White, voice chat is available on all DS systems. That's a shame that DSi enhanced features were never really made available for flash carts. It's not very necessary, most of them are small extras that add little or no gameplay. However I would have found it convenient to have a 4 bar battery in Pokemon Black.
