For all those who were worried, it looks like Sony's not going to launch anything really revolutional againts the 3DS. In fact, the company listened to the PSP community's cries and figured it'd be a good marketing move to release... the Zeus, the...

PSP

Phone

Yup, guys and gals. What was once denied is now before your very eyes. It doesn't look like a haox either ( Sony Ericsson's CEO hints at a game-oriented phone in an interview with Wall Street Journal).

As you can see, the prototype device is fully functional. It sports a 4,1 inch touchscreen display and a slider with control buttons similar to the PSP Go. The device runs on... Android Gingerbread. Other specs that are yet to be confirmed is the 1GHz Qualcomm CPU, 5 megapixel camera, LED flash, 512mb RAM and 1Gb internal memory.

It looks like the company is more interested in competing with both Nintendo AND Apple at the same time and made an effort to create a device that's both a gaming platform and a fuctional smartphone.

You know what they say about devices that do everything? They're mediocre at everything.

It is said that Sony's working on Zeus-specific Android Marketplace. It'll feature exclusive "PlayStation" apps.

Interesting, definatelly a phone I'd like to have in my pocket, even though I'm more of a Windows Mobile guy. On the other hand, better Android then the disgusting crap OS Apple sells on a daily basis.

From  a console standpoint however... The way I see it - no UMD support, no backwards compatibility, no analog controls (looks like two touchpads instead... ugh).

So far, Sony didn't release any information regarding this leak.

As far as 3DS vs PSPhone (Zeus Z1, actually...) is concerned... Sorry Sony, der Krieg ist verloren.

EDIT: Yes, I realize that there's a PSP2 thread. It was about a fake one though, and this is quite "real", also a different device, so I thought it deserves a separate thread. I'll be adding more coverage if the thread will actually interest anyone... and once it's released to the public.

Never said that I don't - in fact, I'm interested in buying it. My Smartphone is a tad old for today's standards. The problem here is that Android games aren't even worth comparing to PSP games, at least most of them. Unless Sony sports some CRAZY SHIT with that Zeus Marketplace, it's going to fail miserably againts the 3DS. What I do like is wireless multiplayer over 3G (ZombiePuppy mentioned it in the other thread). THAT is going to be awesome, no need for Wi-Fi - just an unlimited data plan XP

Also, I'm not quite sure how the PlayStation exclusive plug-in is going to work. Android is quite open for developers, that also means crackers. It'll be copied over onto different Android smartphones in just a few weeks unless the games are tailored to work only under this specific hardware config. I wonder if they'll manage to create the sofware/hardware to prevent that.

Edit: Changed my mind. F*ck >> Posting this just to show what Android can do and what we can *expect* PlayStation apps to look like.

Quite... cool? Want.

Never liked playing games on phones and that's why I use my DS for portable gameplay.
This thing will never be better than 3DS.
And I can't wait to see the 3DS kicking iPhone's ass ( in the games department sly ) .

lol, so they couldn't compete with Nintendo, so now they're going to try and compete with Nintendo at the same time as they compete with Apple?

That'll work.

True, that is a weird tactic...

On the other hand, they're ahead of the iPhone... ahead by several buttons and touch pads X3 As far as gaming is concerned, this'll be most likely a more comfortable device. I won't even mention the CPU's superiority. They won't win with Nin Boys, but in the gaming department, I'm choosing this over the iPhone.

Also, they were already competing with both - PSP versus DS, Xperia's versus the iPhone. Now they just focus their effort on one device, not much has changed.

Let's not forget that it's a joint effort of Sony Ericsson and Sony Corp., the "normal" PSP2 can't be dismissed just yet. More information about this project is to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress.

Double-smart idea to drain a cellphone battery with playing games. All-in-one just doesn't work as well as dedicated devices. Especially in combining an always-on device like a phone with a once-in-a-while device that is a gaming handheld. Repeating the Nokia N-Gage fail once more isn't very clever of Sony.
