Classic Commodore 64 lives again

Fans of retro computing will soon be able to buy a modern PC clad in a classic case.

Commodore is making a Windows PC that fits inside a boxy beige shell that looks exactly like its original C64.

The 8-bit machine was released in 1982, had 64 kilobytes of memory and became one of the best-selling computers ever.

Commodore's updated version will run Windows 7 but also has an emulator capable of playing games written for its ancestor.

Commodore has started taking orders for the C64x, priced at $595 (£364), and said the machines would ship between May and June. It is expected to appear in shops later in the year.

The machine's internal hardware will be based around a dual-core Intel Atom D525, a chip typically found in notebook computers.

Its 1.8Ghz chip is far faster than the 8-bit 1MHz MOS 6502 processor used in the 80's original.

The C64x will also use an integrated Nvidia graphics chip and buyers have the option of equipping a model with a Bluray DVD player. All the hardware for the machine fits inside the keyboard case.

The first models will sport the same taupe colour scheme as the original along with a "clicky" keyboard familiar to anyone who used the older C64 or its predecessor, the Vic 20.

It doesn't live... it's dead... last Commodore 64 was long time ago, what they do now is just another PC with profanation of great name of that company...they should cease that NOW

EDIT #1
Especially that I'm SURE it won't have the great SID chip...there is no way it will have...without SID, Commodore is not Commodore...

I just hope it comes with a decent c64 emulator. This feels like something that should be on mod-retro not commercially available.

Was hoping this was Alekmaul's fabled C64 emulator finally, but I guess he's not working on any NDS stuff anymore.  Frodo is nice for many slower games but the perfect framerate just can't be achieved.

This... is actually quite awesome.

I hope it'll be possible to connect it to a standard television set. It'd be pretty cool if it could read C64 casettes via the original casette reader and use the data within the emulator, but that's just wishful thinking.

In any case, sweet find Retro.

Sorry to have got your hopes up mate. The C64 really did have some classics on it, it is probably my most played emulated system. As Subaru said, it will be hard to match the sound quality of the good old c64. It is legendary in every way possible.

I miss alekmaul too, he really produced some top quality homebrew for the DS. Maybe he will return to his train-journey-coding ventures one day :P

In my humble opinion the only way for C64 sound is to get C64...no emulation, no VST...just C64, that feeling...that look...that sound...mmm fantastic...

I'd love to agree but it has been years since I laid my hands on a C64. The closest I have been was at the Game On exhibition in 2006. I don't think I ever owned one but I remember the C128 vividly which was basically the same thing.

Do you own one?  confused

I use to own an Amiga 500.  It was my first computer.  I LOVED Commodore.

SPeaking of emulators, though, there are a few nice pc based Apple II emus that run all the old apple games, like the SSI games and my personal favorites Sundog (STILL have not quite made a game that compares to it), and Autoduel.  Think Im going to go play them right NOW!

Oh, and who could forget Lemonade Stand and Oregon Trail!!!  And 8-bit Ghostbusters!!
